Cratera

Saffron Robe I’m confused! The blurb says this project is named after a dust storm from the Sahara but the Thar Desert is in the sub-continent! No matter, it’s still an excellent album! The first track is crackly, bubbly noise like a simmering cauldron and the rest are all very tasteful lowercase/ambient noise. I’m not sure if the cover is a grain of sand under a microscope or not but it definitely seems to fit the music very well. Favorite track: Caldera.

about

Thar Desert is a minimalist noise project from Nashville, TN that started in 2020 after the dust storm from the Sahara that blew all the way over to the United States.

"Cratera" is their first physical release, featuring five tracks each thoroughly studied but careful not to wear out their welcome.

Things start off with subdued crackling and rumbling only to drop off into a series of hazy ambient wall noise pieces slowly receding further and further into a void of nothingness.

If you stare at the albums cover while listening, you might imagine something slowly scraping along the abstract reef-like surface during the first track before descending into the black areas within the cracks and holes, becoming increasingly darker as the album unfolds.
